Q: Are chiropractors commonly used for sports injuries?
A: It is quite common in many chiropractic offices to see patients with injuries that are a result of athletics. A great example many of us are familiar with these days is with professional football. As you watch your football games and witness the typical physical injuries to the team members, remember that many of these men use chiropractic care to keep themselves in best form.
Last year, researchers surveyed a group of sport chiropractors and the postdoctoral faculty of the sport chiropractic program of the American Chiropractic Board of Sport physicians. They found that there is significant chiropractic participation in United States professional football. Certified athletic trainers see a role for the sport chiropractor in the National Football League (NFL), primarily as a spinal specialist treating low back and other musculo-skeletal injuries.
A majority of NFL trainers have developed cooperative relationships with chiropractors, with 77 percent having referred a player for this treatment. Thirty-one percent of NFL teams have a Doctor of Chiropractic officially on staff and 12 percent of teams refer players to chiropractors but do not directly retain them. You may not be a professional football player, but see your own chiropractor if you get sore or injured during a friendly game at the local park.
